I offer the following services:

  • Developmental Editing

Also called “content” or “structural” editing. It’s always hard to say exactly what a developmental edit will entail, since so much depends on the needs of the manuscript and the goals of the author. But, generally, I’m making suggestions about character, plot, setting, and story arc. I might look for ways to strengthen conflict or build tension. This is big-picture stuff. It will result in substantial revisions by you, the author, but it always makes for a stronger story in the long run.

  • Copy Editing

Sometimes called “line editing.” When I copy edit I’m looking for errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I’m making sure everything is clear and concise. I’m also ensuring consistency in language and story. If it’s “book bag” in one place and “bookbag” in another, I standardize it. If a character loses her cell phone in Chapter 8 but is using it to text in Chapter 9, I remedy that, or call your attention to it so you can fix it as you see fit. After all, you’re the boss.

  • Proofreading

The final phase, the last hurrah. When I proofread, I only fix outright errors. (If the copy editor left any inconsistencies, any “book bag” / “bookbags,” I mark those too.) Proofreaders are the final set of eyes before the book goes to print. I look for design issues, like screwy fonts or bad breaks, and I also check all running headers, page numbers, chapter openers, and section breaks. This stage of the editing process works best after design and layout.

  • Coaching

Book coaches guide writers through the entire writing process, from outlining and planning to drafting, revising, querying, and publishing. As a book coach, I help you plan, plot, develop, and stay on track as you meet your daily (or weekly, or monthly!) writing goals.

  • Hourly Consultations

I am also available by the hour. In hourly sessions, I meet with clients one-on-one over Zoom to discuss their work in depth, answer industry questions, address process concerns, or dish out the gossip—just kidding! Unless…
