Frequently Asked Questions

Is there anything you don’t do?

Yes. I don’t write—I always leave that part up to you. I make suggestions, and I provide my rationale and reasoning behind those suggestions. I’m also big on examples, so sometimes I might write a paragraph or two that illustrates the principles I’m talking about in action (or tries to, anyway).

But, by and large, it’s important that you incorporate my feedback. As the author, you have agency; you have choices. Editing isn’t me imposing my personal preferences on your story. It’s me providing you with the framework and foundation so that your imagination can take it from there.

Are there any genres you won’t work on?

No memoirs, no nonfiction. Nothing “true”—at least, nothing that you’re not willing to fictionalize.

What are your rates?

Every project is different, and I adjust rates according to genre, scope, condition of the manuscript, and turnaround time. For a general sense of rates, the Editorial Freelancers Association rate chart is a good place to start.

What’s your average turnaround time.

Two to three weeks. Sometimes longer, especially if a book is over 100K words.

What is your cancellation policy?

Life happens! If for any reason you need to cancel, I’d ask that you do so at least two weeks before our scheduled start date. Any later, and a cancellation fee of 25% of the full project amount will apply.
